‘Tis the season to decorate early for Christmas!

All our staff are really excited, now that they have taken delivery of their Christmas stock, because it means they get to decorate the Christmas trees early, to show off our new decorations to best effect. This year, many people are also putting up their decorations early. It’s been a year like no other, and after living with Covid-19 for months, people are in need of some cheering. Putting up the Christmas tree is a great way to do that, as looking at the bright colours, and remembering happy times is a great mood lifter.

There’s even scientific evidence to suggest that decorating your tree helps bring joy and relaxation, and we all need some of that right now, don’t we? According to this article, a small study in Denmark in 2015 confirmed that the brain does, indeed have a Christmas spirit, and breaking out the decorations leads to happier people, and therefore a happier home! It’s to do with the way brain activity changes to encourage positive thoughts, and anecdotal evidence also suggests that people who put their Christmas decorations up early feel more upbeat and are less inclined to negative thinking.

There are too schools of thought on putting up decorations. The Elves want the tree up as soon as possible, while the Grinches scoff at any attempt to decorate before at least the middle of December. Here in Spain, it’s traditional to wait on decorating until after 8 December, which is a Catholic holiday to celebrate the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. Known as ‘Immaculada,’ it’s also the official start of Christmas in Spain.

Each year, there are different trends around Christmas decorations, and 2020 is no exception. Traditional red and green is always popular, as is white and gold. This year, blue and white is also a frequent choice. Blue is a reminder of the winter season, and it’s also a very calming colour, which is needed in these challenging times. Sparkly shades of silver and gold are very cheering too.

As far as actual decorations go, there’s a definite accent on the natural – flowers, feathers, birds, pine cones, icicles and snowflakes. Many materials are natural too, as more and more people become aware of the need for sustainable living. Don’t worry if you can’t decide how you want your tree to look – our experienced, enthusiastic staff will help you plan a decoration scheme to suit your room and personality. Why not bring along a couple of photos of the room where the tree is going to spark ideas?

We have a fabulous choice of Christmas decorations in various colours and themes, and we follow the same procedure as we do with our furnishings. You can view everything in room settings, so you can visualise how your tree will look in your own home. Come along soon to browse our new stock of room, tree and outdoor decorations, and spark your enthusiasm for the Christmas season. It may be very different this year, but you can still make some happy memories with those you love.
